  1. Comics! For Windows
  2. -------------------

  4. Comics! For Windows is a comic book database maintenance program
  5. that runs under Windows 3.n in standard or enhanced mode.  It is
  6. easily the most sophisticated, flexible, and powerful comic book
  7. database on the market, while also being very easy to learn and
  8. use.  (This is straight from the users of Comics!, many of whom
  9. tried several database packages before finding Comics!.)  Because
  10. of the size of the download files, this file is provided separately
  11. so that you can decide whether you would like to download the full
  12. demonstration version.  A detailed feature list describing many
  13. of the capabilities of the Comics! software is at the end of this
  14. file.  The same demonstration version is available on diskette for
  15. $7.00 -- see ordering information later in this text.

  19. Very Important
  20. --------------

  22. o  This is the complete Comics! system except:
  23.    *  You can only add twenty-five comic books.
  24.    *  Only the 01/93 market values beginning with "A" are included.
  25.         The full version includes constantly updated values for more
  26.         than 60,000 comics, with more being added on a regular
  27.         basis.
  28.    *  There are no on-line tutorials.
  29.  
  30. If you receive any error message when attempting to start up
  31. Comics!, or when trying to print reports, etc., check the on-line
  32. help topics "Problems Running Comics!" and "Error Messages".
  33. There are several environmental possibilities for the messages,
  34. particularly if you are using SHARE.EXE or if you have the Origin
  35. FX screen saver.

  37. You need to download three files to install Comics!  Download
  38. either one of, but not both, COMW0.ZIP or COMW1.ZIP.  COMW0.ZIP
  39. does not contain the file VBRUN200.DLL -- if you already have
  40. this file available on your system, download COMW0.ZIP.  If
  41. you do not, download COMW1.ZIP.  COMW2.ZIP and COMW3.ZIP should
  42. also be downloaded.

  44. Installation of the Demo Version
  45. --------------------------------

  47. If you have at least 7 MB of disk space available:
  48.  
  49. 1.  Unzip all three files into a single directory.  Do not name
  50.     this directory COMICS or COMICS!.
  51. 2.  If you already have VBRUN200.DLL on your system and downloaded
  52.     COMW0.ZIP, copy VBRUN200.DLL to filename VBRUN200.DL_ (the last
  53.     character is an underscore) in the directory.
  54. 3.  From Windows, run SETUP.EXE from this directory.
  55. 4.  Answer the prompts for a program and database directory.  These
  56.     do not have to exist, and the defaults are suggested.
  57. 5.  Files will now be copied and expanded.
  58. 6.  To create a program group, answer the next prompt affirmatively.
  59. 7.  To preview Comics! help and release notes, click on the "Yes"
  60.     button to enter Windows Help.

  62. If you do not have at least 7 MB available:

  65.     the disks as 1, 2, and 3.
  66. 2.  If you already have VBRUN200.DLL on your system and downloaded
  67.     COMW0.ZIP, copy VBRUN200.DLL to filename VBRUN200.DL_ (the last
  68.     character is an underscore) on the first diskette.
  69. 3.  From Windows, run SETUP.EXE from the first diskette.

  71.     do not have to exist, and the defaults are suggested.

  73.     when directed.

  78. How To Use Several Features
  79. ---------------------------

  81. The art frame icon (below the magnifying glass) is used to
  82. associate a BMP picture with a comic.  Click on it and then
  83. choose the BMP in the program directory for an example.
  84. Support for GIF, TGA, and several other formats will be
  85. available soon.
  86.  
  87. If you get the message "Printer Error" when starting Comics!,
  88. make sure that you have a printer driver installed through
  89. Windows control panel.  If you do not have a printer attached
  90. to the computer, install the generic printer.
  91.  
  92. To display reports to a window, you must run Reports! from the
  93. program manager rather than Comics!.  You can size the report
  94. window or always have it maximized by clicking on the size
  95. report window button on the Setup Window (from the Reports!
  96. icon, press the Setup button).
  97.  
  98. The magnifying glass icon is used to enter details about codes,
  99. and it corresponds to the options on the Detail menu.  To use it,
  100. click and hold over the magnifying glass.  Then drag (move while
  101. holding down the left mouse button) the smaller magnifying glass
  102. over the box containing a code, such as the title.  Release the
  103. button (dropping the icon) to display the detail entry window.
  104.  
  105. Story titles can be associated with a comic by clicking on the
  106. stories icon (in the titles box).
  107.  
  108. The book icons are used to enter more than two creators or more
  109. than one character for a comic book.  Click on the book to display
  110. the corresponding entry window.  The book will appear open if
  111. there are more entries than can be displayed on the main window.

  113. Click on the folder icons to add detailed notes to a comic.  This
  114. action displays a window in which up to a 255 character comment
  115. can be added.  If there is a comment associated with the comic,
  116. the folder will be displayed open rather than closed.

  118. There are numerous options and features of the system which are
  119. described in the user manual available in the full version of
  120. Comics!, including descriptions of preferences and the other
  121. windows and controls.  The on-line help also contains detailed
  122. descriptions of all of the components of the Comics! system.

  127. System Requirements

  130. To run Comics!, you must have an IBM or compatible running Windows
  131. 3.n in standard or enhanced mode, and approximately 3.5 MB on your
  132. hard drive.  A 16 MHz or faster 386 with 2MB+ RAM also is about the
  133. minimum hardware configuration, and DOS 5.0 is required on machines
  134. with close to the minimum resources.  Windows 3.1 is required for the
  135. on-line help to function correctly.  DON'T DOWNLOAD COMICS! IF YOU
  136. DON'T MEET THIS MINIMUM CONFIGURATION, YOU'LL ONLY BE DISAPPOINTED!

  141. The full version of Comics! is priced at $39.95.  The price
  142. includes 2-day priority United States Postal Service delivery.
  143. If you have downloaded Comics! and mention that while ordering,
  144. there are fewer files to ship, and the price is $36.95. 
  145. Canadian orders add $3.00 handling, other non-US is $8.00
  146. additional.  The demonstration version is available on
  147. diskettes for $7.00 -- add $2.50 for second day delivery.
  148. Check or money order only accepted for the demo diskettes.

  150. price is also $36.95, but you must mention the fact when

  187.     titles.  This is useful for keeping track of running orders, etc.
